SAP 016 – Anita Abbey; promoting the beauty of the motherland through skincare

Anita Abbey is the founder of Shea Glo Skincare, a natural skincare company based in London but inspired by Africa.

They create Shea butter skin care products with a fusion of western and African ingredients.

Anita is passionate about promoting the beauty of Africa through skincare.

Personal life

“I was born in the UK and lived here until I was about 17. Then, I moved to Ghana, where my parents are from.”

“I went to a boarding school over there and that was when I first discovered my passion and love for Africa. I really found a sense of belonging and peace there.”

“I returned to the UK to study and I worked for a while. Now, I’m studying again and also running the business. So, I’m doing quite a lot at the moment.”

Area of expertise

“I would say beauty and skincare. If I can use that to make a difference, someway, somehow, especially for my people, that would definitely be something I’ll do for the rest of my life.”

“I see myself as a social entrepreneur. I don’t see myself as just an entrepreneur. I want my business to make a difference.”

Lowest of the low

“It’s that moment when you don’t know what you’re doing. Do I just want to sit in the office for the rest of my life? Or, do I want to follow my passion and take it to the next level?

That feeling of uncertainty, for me, was quite low.”

How do you step out of the low moments?
“It’s important to take breaks. I find that being in a different environment helps.”

“I take every opportunity to change my scenery so I can come back refreshed and get back to business”

Lightbulb moment

“I always had an interest in beauty. Skincare, especially.

Initially, I just wanted to make something for myself because my dad, at that time, was sending me Shea butter. I had gone to Ghana and discovered it. I was like, this is amazing.”

“One day I thought to myself, I do love this but it was quite unflattering, in its raw state, it’s a bit strong-smelling. I’m sure there’s a way that I can make this more appealing.”

“I started my research on different types of oils, things I can actually couple with Shea butter to create something for myself.”

“So, I did that and I gave some to my friends in mini pots that I bought from Ikea.”

“And, my friends said, ‘this is amazing, I love it’ and they were like ‘you know, you should give it out to more people’. That’s how it started.”

What’s got you buzzing right now?

“At the moment, being one year in and I am moving to next level and exploring wider markets.”

“As Christmas time is coming up, I’ve got lots of Christmas planning and promotions. I’m going to have a Christmas market stall like I did last year.”

“And, I have a pop up at the Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon on 25 November. This will be a chance to grab the Christmas packs as well.”

What was holding you back from building your brand?


“Fear of anything, fear of success, fear of failing. And, I couldn’t explain it; I was scared, thinking ifs and buts. That was the only thing really; I had the Shea butter there.”

Which is your social media platform of choice and why?

“For me it’s Instagram. I’m a visual person.”

“I love images and I love putting things together”

Share one daily routine that contributes to your success

“In the morning, I have my 10 minutes of quiet time. It is 10 minutes of prayer. In that 10 minutes, I layout everything I want to do for that day and ask God to guide me through it.”
